Kalbelia dance is a famous folk dance in the Rajasthan state of India. It is also known by other traditional names like ‘Sapera Dance’ or ‘Snake Charmer Dance’. Kalbelia dance is particularly performed by a Rajasthani tribe called ‘Kalbelia’. The word Kalbeliya is a blend of two words which are ‘Kal’ and ‘Beliya’. The word ‘Kal’ means snake and ‘Beliya’ means friends and that is why the word combined means friend of snakes. Such is the popularity of this dance that the Kalbelia dance and song of Rajasthan is now on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2010. In Kalbelia dance both men and women take part in Kalbelia dance.

History of Kalbelia Dance

This tribe is a nomadic tribe that was originally the snake charmer of Rajasthan. it was barred as a scheduled and untouchable caste. He was banned and looked down upon by society so he found a snakebite cure for his life, freed people’s houses from snakes and made tourists aware of snakes, and of course, performed snake dance.

This tribe has been living and following the same routine, traditions, and lifestyle since medieval times. It has learned to earn their living through all these means of occupation and employment. The men used to earn money through all these activities. The women of this tribe used to occasionally dance on the streets during festivals.  The aim is to earn extra money from the rich. There was a young girl name Gulabi Sapera who was spotted by the Rajasthan Ministry of tourism on the streets.

Kalbelia Dance Evolution

This Dance is a tribal dance of the Kalbelia tribe of Rajasthan. His tribe is a community of Rajasthan which was known in ancient times. Often moved from one place to another instead of staying in one place and making their home. The people of this tribe are known for their tremendous ability to catch snakes and trade in snake venom. This is also called Sapera or Snake Charmers. Kalbeliya folk dance is performed by females to the tunes of ‘Been’ on the occasion of joy in the Kalbelia community. There is no formal training program or school, manuscript, and text for teaching and learning Kalbelia songs and Kalbelia dance. This traditional art is passed from generation to generation.

The Women dance in circles with a pair in the center who entertain the crowd with swift movements of their bodies, but their heads are covered under the veil. Slowly and smoothly each pair performs and merges into the circle so that the other pair can perform or please the gathering. The ladies move their bodies in an acrobatic manner or even much smoother than that. They make the viewer think that their body is made of rubber instead of bones. The dance is exhausting not only for the dancers but also for the audience. It consists of many breathtaking and dangerous moves that leave the person in shock. The dance is usually performed full time during the Holi holiday season.

Kalbelia Costumes

Kalbelia dance dress is a traditional black swirling skirt that sways sinuously to the plaintive notes of the ‘been’ — the wooden instrument of the snake charmers. Pair this charming outfit with dance movements that look like serpents.

  • The clothing of the upper body is called an angrakhi.
  • The item of cloth worn head is known as the odhani.
  • The clothing of the lower body is called a lehenga.

All these fabrics are mixed and stitched in red and black. When these dancers perform these clothes represent a combination of colors soothing to the eyes as well as the atmosphere.

The Instruments

Kalbelia dance is accompanied by Rajasthani folk music instruments such as morchang, dufli, dholak, khanjari, khuralio. The most traditional and important instrument used is the ‘been or poongi’. Which is a wooden instrument used by snake charmers. All these instruments together create sensuous and mesmerizing music that plays with an ascending tempo and the dancers whirling to its beat leave even the spectators out of breath.

कालबेलिया नृत्य भारत के राजस्थान राज्य का एक लोक नृत्य है। इसे ‘सपेरा डांस’ या ‘स्नेक चार्मर डांस’ जैसे अन्य नामों से भी जाना जाता है। यह नृत्य विशेष रूप से ‘कालबेलिया’ नामक राजस्थानी जनजाति द्वारा किया जाता है। कालबेलिया शब्द दो शब्दों का मिश्रण है जो ‘काल’ और ‘बेलिया’ हैं। ‘कल’ शब्द का अर्थ सांप और ‘बेलिया’ का अर्थ है दोस्त और इसलिए शब्द साथ में मतलब सांप दोस्त। इस नृत्य की लोकप्रियता इतनी दुनिया भर में है कि राजस्थान का कालबेलिया नृत्य और गीत अब वर्ष 2010 से यूनेस्को की मानवता की अमूर्त सांस्कृतिक विरासत की प्रतिनिधि सूची में हैं। इस नृत्य में पुरुष और महिला दोनों ही भाग लेते हैं। जबकि होली के दौरान विशेष पारंपरिक नृत्य किए जाते हैं

इतिहास

यह जनजाति एक खानाबदोश जनजाति है जो मूल रूप से राजस्थान की सपेरा थी और इसे अनुसूचित और अछूत जाति के रूप में वर्जित किया गया है। उन्हें समाज द्वारा प्रतिबंधित और नीचे देखा गया था, इसलिए उन्होंने अपने जीवन के लिए सांप के काटने का इलाज ढूंढ लिया, लोगों के घरों को सांपों से मुक्त कर दिया और पर्यटकों को सांपों के बारे में जागरूक किया और निश्चित रूप से सांप नृत्य किया।

यह जनजाति मध्ययुगीन काल से एक ही दिनचर्या, परंपराओं और जीवन शैली का पालन कर रही है और व्यवसाय और रोजगार के इन सभी साधनों के माध्यम से अपना जीवन यापन करना सीख गई है। इन सभी गतिविधियों के माध्यम से पुरुष पैसा कमाते थे और इस जनजाति की महिलाएं कभी-कभी त्योहारों के दौरान अमीरों से अतिरिक्त पैसा कमाने के उद्देश्य से सड़कों पर नृत्य करती थीं। गुलाबी सपेरा नाम की एक युवा लड़की थी जिसे राजस्थान पर्यटन मंत्रालय ने सड़कों पर देखा था।

कालबेलिया नृत्य विकास

यह नृत्य राजस्थान की कालबेलिया जनजाति का नृत्य है। यह जनजाति राजस्थान का एक समुदाय है जिसे प्राचीन काल में जाना जाता था और एक स्थान पर रहने और अपने घर बनाने के बजाय अक्सर एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर चले जाते थे। कालबेलिया जनजाति के लोगों को सांपों को पकड़ने और सांप के जहर का व्यापार करने का मुख्य व्यवसाय माना जाता है। उन्हें सपेरा या सपेरा भी कहा जाता है। कालबेलिया समुदाय में खुशी के अवसर पर महिलाओं द्वारा बीन की धुन पर कालबेलिया लोक नृत्य किया जाता है। कालबेलिया गीत और कालबेलिया नृत्य सिखाने और सीखने के लिए कोई संगठित प्रशिक्षण प्रणाली या स्कूल, पांडुलिपियां और लिखित पाठ नहीं है। यह लोक कला पीढ़ी दर पीढ़ी हस्तांतरित होती है।

कालबेलिया नृत्य का प्रदर्शन

महिलाएं केंद्र में एक जोड़ी के साथ मंडलियों में नृत्य करती हैं जो अपने शरीर के तेज आंदोलनों के साथ भीड़ का मनोरंजन करती हैं, लेकिन उनके सिर घूंघट के नीचे आते हैं। धीरे-धीरे और सुचारू रूप से हर जोड़ी प्रदर्शन करती है और मंडली में विलीन हो जाती है ताकि दूसरी जोड़ी प्रदर्शन कर सके या सभा को खुश कर सके। महिलाएं अपने शरीर को एक्रोबेटिक तरीके से या उससे भी ज्यादा चिकने तरीके से हिलाती हैं। वे दर्शकों को यह मान लेते हैं कि उनका शरीर हड्डियों के बजाय रबर से बना है। नृत्य न केवल नर्तकियों के लिए बल्कि दर्शकों के लिए भी थकाऊ होता है क्योंकि इसमें कई लुभावनी और खतरनाक चालें होती हैं जो व्यक्ति को सदमे से बाहर कर देती हैं। नृत्य आमतौर पर होली के त्योहारी मौसम के समय पूरी तरह से किया जाता है।

कालबेलिया नृत्य पोशाक

कालबेलिया नृत्य पोशाक एक पारंपरिक काले रंग की ज़ुल्फ़ स्कर्ट है जो ‘बीन’ – सपेरों के लकड़ी के वाद्य यंत्र के वादी नोटों के लिए पापी रूप से झूलती है। इस आकर्षक पोशाक को नागों की तरह दिखने वाले नृत्य आंदोलनों के साथ मिलाएं।

  • ऊपरी शरीर के कपड़ों को अंगराखी कहा जाता है।
  • सिर पर पहने जाने वाले कपड़े की वस्तु को ओढ़नी कहते हैं।
  • निचले शरीर के कपड़ों को लहंगा कहा जाता है।

इन सभी कपड़ों को लाल और काले रंग में मिश्रित किया जाता है और सिले भी जाते हैं जैसे कि जब ये नर्तक प्रदर्शन करते हैं तो ये कपड़े आंखों के साथ-साथ वातावरण के लिए सुखदायक रंगों के संयोजन का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।

वाद्य – यंत्र

कालबेलिया नृत्य राजस्थानी लोक संगीत के पारंपरिक वाद्ययंत्रों जैसे मोरचंग, दुफली, ढोलक, खंजरी, खुरालियो के साथ होता है। लेकिन इस्तेमाल किया जाने वाला सबसे पारंपरिक और महत्वपूर्ण उपकरण ‘बीन या पोंगी’ है जो सपेरों द्वारा इस्तेमाल किया जाने वाला एक लकड़ी का वाद्य यंत्र है। ये सभी वाद्ययंत्र मिलकर कामुक और मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने वाले संगीत का निर्माण करते हैं जो एक आरोही गति के साथ बजता है और इसकी ताल पर घूमते नर्तक दर्शकों को भी सांस से बाहर कर देते हैं।
