Kummi dance is a popular and beautiful traditional dance of the Tamil Nadu State. The word ‘Kummi’ comes from the Tamil word ‘Kommai’, which means to clap. It started at a time when instruments could not be invented. A group of Tamil people celebrates their festivals and other happy occasions by performing a traditional dance known as the Kummi dance. Kummi dance is among the oldest and easiest dances. This traditional dance is performed at festivals such as Pongal, and Onam. It is also performed on special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other temple ceremonies.

Kummi Dance Performance

In the performance of kummi dance generally, the women of the community perform a beautifully Kummi dance. The men are also joined in the dance during the festivities.

In the simple Kummi dance, women stand in a circle and clap their hands. The dance steps are also repeated. The Kummi dance is performed in simple steps such as a forward and backward sync, accompanied by rhythmic applause. Dancers perform hand movements such as resembling the reaping and harvesting of crops. One of the women leads the singing with a favorite song while the rest dance. Each artist sings a new line in turn and the dance stops when everyone gets tired. Kummi dance facial expressions play an important role.

In some local variations of Kummi dance, men are also seen participating with women. In this dance, men create a circle with put sticks in their hands also women stand inside in a small circle. The main thing that is enjoyed in this dance form is the synergy between the clapping of hands by the women and the beating of sticks by the men.

Kummi Dance Costume

The Kummi dance does not follow a specific dress code so the costume can be many. Typically, young girls wear pavadai chattai, teenagers wear pavadai dhavani, and older women wear a sari.

Musical Instruments

It started when there were no musical instruments and the participants spent time clapping. The dancers form a circle and clap their hands in rhythm with the music. Dancers sometimes move slowly to mimic the harvest and sorting of crops. The women hold each other’s hands moving and bending with a repeating pattern. Their movements and steps are in perfect harmony with the kummi song sung by the group’s lead singers as the rest of the people dance.

कुम्मी नृत्य तमिलनाडु राज्य का एक प्रसिद्ध और सुंदर लोक नृत्य है। ‘कुम्मी’ शब्द की उत्पत्ति तमिल ‘कोम्मई’ से हुई है, जिसका अर्थ है हाथों की ताली बजाकर नृत्य करना, और इसकी उत्पत्ति ऐसे समय में हुई थी जब वाद्ययंत्रों का आविष्कार नहीं हुआ था। तमिल लोगों का एक समूह अपने त्योहारों और अन्य शुभ अवसरों को कुम्मी नृत्य के रूप में जाना जाने वाला लोक नृत्य करके मनाता है। कुम्मी नृत्य सबसे पुराने और सबसे सरल लोक नृत्यों में से एक है। यह पारंपरिक नृत्य पोंगल, और ओणम जैसे त्योहारों और विशेष अवसरों जैसे शादियों, जन्मदिन और अन्य मंदिर समारोहों में किया जाता है।

साधारण कुम्मी नृत्य में महिलाएं एक घेरे में खड़ी होती हैं और ताली बजाती हैं। डांस स्टेप्स भी दोहराए जाते हैं। कुम्मी नृत्य लयबद्ध तालियों के साथ आगे और पीछे के समन्वयन जैसे सरल चरणों में किया जाता है। नर्तक हाथों की हरकतें करते हैं जैसे फसलों की कटाई और कटाई के समान। महिलाओं में से एक पसंदीदा गीत के साथ गायन का नेतृत्व करती है जबकि बाकी नृत्य करती है। प्रत्येक कलाकार बारी-बारी से एक नई पंक्ति गाता है और जब सभी थक जाते हैं तो नृत्य रुक जाता है। कुम्मी नृत्य में चेहरे के भाव महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं।

विभिन्न प्रकार के कुम्मी नृत्य

कुम्मी नृत्य “कुम्मी गीतों” के सामंजस्य में किया जाता है। इस नृत्य के गीत आधुनिक समय में थियोटम उत्सव के लिए एक लोकप्रिय जोड़ बन गए। कई प्रकार की कुम्मी जानी जाती हैं, जिनमें पूनथट्टी कुम्मी, दीपा कुम्मी, कुलवई कुम्मी, कादिर कुम्मी, मुलैपरी कुम्मी आदि शामिल हैं।

नृत्य पोशाक

कुम्मी नृत्य किसी विशेष ड्रेस कोड का पालन नहीं करता है इसलिए पोशाक कई हो सकती है। आम तौर पर, युवा लड़कियां पवडाई चट्टई पहनती हैं, किशोर पवदई धवानी पहनते हैं, और वयस्क महिलाएं साड़ी पहनती हैं।

संगीत वाद्ययंत्र
