Pandit Durga Lal ji was born in 1948 in Mahendragarh, Rajasthan. He was from a family of traditional musicians and his father Mr. Omkar Lal took the initiative in art. He learned the art of Kathak dance from renowned gurus of Jaipur Gharana Pandit Sundar Prasad and his brother Sri Devi Lal. Pandit durga lal ji also learned the art of playing pakhavaj from Pandit Purushottam Das of Nathdwara. He made a niche for himself among the Kathak teachers and dancers of the country in no time. Under the guidance of his gurus, he has mastered the dance, rhythm, and vocal music.

Pandit Durga Lal ji has performed extensively in India and abroad. He is today one of the leading exponents of the art of Kathak. His excellence in pure dance and rhythm is widely recognized. He has experimented with the rhythms and rhythms of Hindustani and Carnatic music in his choreographic works.

Durga lal ji is the recipient of several awards, including the Rajasthan State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Academy in 1983 – 1984 for his talent in the field of dance and his contribution to its promotion. He is currently teaching at the Kathak Kendra in New Delhi. He played the lead role in the dance drama Ghanshyam (1989) in a program produced by Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Achievements and Awards

Pandit Durga Lal Ji was honored with ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India. Devi Lalji took great pleasure and pride in the progress and achievements of Durga Lalji. In his early twenties, He succeeded in becoming a famous dancer and then went on to perform at all the great conventions in India as well as abroad. The two brothers performed together. His performance resonated with thunderous applause.

The aesthetic and physical dimensions of Durga Lalji matched the immaculate character of the man. There was no shadow on this moon. Stardom may open a whole new world of pageantry to him, but the simplicity of Pt Durgalalji remained untouched. He was a great mentor, a discipline, and a hard worker. He was so confident in his students that nothing seemed impossible. Durga Lalji’s disciples were constantly advised to “Don’t be a parrot. Feel the movement, make it yours and do it, so that the dance is your statement and not your master’s imitation.”

Basant Panchami of 1990 is engraved on the minds of the people of the art world, as it was on that fateful day that Pt. At the peak of his career at the age of forty, Durga Lalji succumbed to a major cardiac arrest. This happened soon after the marathon performance in Lucknow for the Kathak Festival of UP Sangeet Natak Akademi. The Jaipur Gharana of Kathak was deprived of its light. Pandit Durga Lal was a representative artist of the Jaipur Gharana, who surprised the audience with his creative talent in Kathak dance.

Durga Lal died on 21 January 1990 in Pandit Durga Lal. They had two children, the elder daughter Nupur and the younger son Mohit Nupur are Kathak artists and singers. His disciples include the famous dancers Jayant Castruar and Uma Dogra. After Pandit Durga Lal’s death, his children and other art fraternity members, Durga Lal Ji In memory of, Durga Lal Memorial Festival were organized. Uma Dogra had organized “Pandit Durga Lal Samaroh” till 2005 in memory of Shri Durga Lal Ji for 15 years.

श्री दुर्गा लाल का जन्म 1948 में राजस्थान के महेंद्रगढ़ में हुआ था। वह पारंपरिक संगीतकारों के परिवार से थे और उनके पिता श्री ओमकार लाल ने कला में पहल की थी। उन्होंने जयपुर घराने के प्रख्यात गुरुओं पंडित सुंदर प्रसाद और उनके भाई श्री देवी लाल से कथक नृत्य की कला सीखी। उन्होंने नाथद्वारा के पंडित पुरुषोत्तम दास से पखावज खेलने की कला भी सीखी।उन्होंने कुछ ही समय में देश के कथक शिक्षकों और नर्तकियों के बीच अपने लिए जगह बनाई। अपने गुरुओं के मार्गदर्शन में, उन्होंने नृत्य, ताल और स्वर संगीत में दक्षता हासिल की है।

श्री दुर्गा लाल ने भारत और विदेशों में व्यापक प्रदर्शन किया है। वे आज कथक की कला के अग्रणी प्रतिपादकों में से एक हैं। शुद्ध नृत्य और लय में उनकी उत्कृष्टता को व्यापक रूप से मान्यता प्राप्त है। उन्होंने अपने कोरियोग्राफिक कार्यों में हिंदुस्तानी और कर्नाटक संगीत के ताल और ताल वाद्य के साथ प्रयोग किया है।

नृत्य के क्षेत्र में उनकी प्रतिभा और इसके संवर्धन में उनके योगदान के लिए 1983 -1984 में राजस्थान राज्य संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार और राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक अकादमी सहित कई पुरस्कारों के प्राप्तकर्ता हैं। वह वर्तमान में नई दिल्ली में कथक केंद्र में पढ़ा रहे हैं।पंडित रवि शंकर जी द्वारा निर्मित कार्यक्रम में  उन्होंने  नृत्य नाटक घनश्याम में  मुख्य भूमिका निभाई (1989 )

उपलब्धियां और पुरस्कार

उन्हें भारत सरकार द्वारा ‘पद्मश्री’ से सम्मानित किया था।देवीलालजी ने दुर्गालालजी की प्रगति और उपलब्धियों पर बहुत खुशी और गर्व किया। अपने शुरुआती बिसवां दशा में, दुर्गालालजी एक प्रसिद्ध नर्तक बनने में सफल रहे और फिर भारत के साथ-साथ विदेशों में सभी महान सम्मलेन में प्रदर्शन करने लगे। दोनों भाई एक साथ प्रदर्शन करते थे। उनका प्रदर्शन तालियों की गड़गड़ाहट के साथ गूंज जाता था।

पंडित दुर्गा लाल जी का व्यक्तित्व

दुर्गालालजी के भौतिक और कलात्मक आयामों का सौंदर्यबोध मनुष्‍य के निष्कलंक चरित्र से मेल खाता था। इस चाँद पर छाया नहीं थी। स्टारडम उनके लिए आडंबर की एक पूरी नई दुनिया खोल सकता है, लेकिन पं दुर्गालालजी की सादगी अछूती रही। वह एक महान गुरु, एक अनुशासन और एक कठिन कार्यकर्ता थे। वह अपने छात्रों में इतने आत्मविश्वास का संचार करता थे  कि कुछ भी असंभव नहीं लगता था। दुर्गालालजी के शिष्यों को निरंतर सलाह थी कि “तोते नहीं बनो। आंदोलन को महसूस करो, इसे अपना बनाओ और इसे करो, ताकि नृत्य आपका कथन हो और आपके गुरु का अनुकरण न हो।”

1990 की बसंत पंचमी को कला की दुनिया के लोगों के दिमाग पर उकेरा गया है, क्योंकि यह उस भाग्यवादी दिन था कि पं। चालीस साल की उम्र में अपने करियर के चरम पर, दुर्गालालजी ने एक बड़े कार्डियक गिरफ्तारी के बाद दम तोड़ दिया। यह यूपी संगीत नाटक अकादमी के कथक महोत्सव के लिए लखनऊ में मैराथन प्रदर्शन के तुरंत बाद हुआ। कथक के जयपुर घराने को इसके प्रकाश से वंचित किया गया था।पं दुर्गालाल जयपुर घराने  के एक प्रतिनिधि कलाकार थे, जिन्होंने कथक नृत्य में अपनी रचनात्मक प्रतिभा से दर्शकों को आश्चर्यचकित किया।

पं दुर्गा लाल 21 जनवरी 1990 को दुर्गालाल का निधन हो गया। उनके दो बच्चे थे , बड़ी बेटी नूपुर और छोटे बेटे मोहित नूपुर कथक कलाकार और गायक हैं ।उनके शिष्यों में प्रसिद्ध नर्तक जयंत कास्त्रुआर और उमा डोगरा शामिल हैं।।दुर्गा लाल की मृत्यु के बाद उनके बच्चों और अन्य आर्ट बिरादरी सदस्यों ने  दुर्गा लाल जी की स्मृति में दुर्गा लाल मेमोरियल महोत्सव का आयोजन किया।   श्री दुर्गा लाल जी की स्मृति में 15 वर्षों से उमा डोगरा ने “पंडित दुर्गा लाल समरोह” का आयोजन 2005 तक किया था।
