Maruni Dance of Sikkim

Maruni is a popular dance in nearby Nepal, Darjeeling, and Sikkim. It is the oldest and most popular dance of the Nepalese community living in these regions, who originally danced as part of the Tihar festival. They dressed in colorful costumes and rich costumes. The dancers perform this dance with the traditional Nepali Naumati Baja Orchestra.  To celebrate the “victory of good over evil” and to celebrate Khushiya Ishar.

Maruni Dance has been one of the important identities of the Magar community from ancient times to the present day. In recent years, due to the lack of interest in learning it by young people. So, the dance has become threatened with extinction. That fear has begun to mobilize some communities. Today, the community is pushing its young people to preserve Maruni Nach.

History of Maruni Dance

The dance originated in the Magar community and later people from different communities started adopting it. Maruni as it dances in Western Nepal is different from other places. Maruni and Sorathi dances were created in Western Nepal by the Magar community. The Magars who migrated to Eastern Nepal started to make small changes as they performed them there too. Nowadays other communities like Gurung, Kirat, and Khas also perform the Maruni dance on various occasions.

At the Balihang festival, Maruni, Sorathi, and Hurra are performed (dances performed by Eastern Magars also known as Deusi Nach). He is believed to own originated in the Magar Army within the 14th century. Under the name of the sick king Balihang Rana Magar of Palpa, Pokhara Butwal.  Balihang Rana Magar was king in the 14th century (of Palpa, Pokhara, Baldeng, Butwal & Gorkhapur) when the empire was extended from Palpa to Butwal and Gorakhpur. Deusi Re means “King of Priests” and Bahilo means “Let Us Help”. Which are related to the theme of Balihang Rana Magar.

Maruni Dance Performance

The dancers move rhythmically, balancing the copper haalis on their palms with lit diyas arranged on them. Sometimes the Maruni Dance is performed to the accompaniment of the nine instrument orchestra is known as “Naumat Baja”. Earlier this dance was performed by young boys disguised as girls.

Instruments & Songs of Maruni Dance

  1. This folk music and dances are associated with the beauty of the environment. It reflect the harvest season and is designed for good fortune and prosperity.
  2. Maruni dances are performed to the accompaniment of the nine instrument orchestra known as “Nau-mati Baja”.
  3. Nepali traditional dance “Tamang Selo”. This traditional dance group from the Tamang community is played with a rhythmic sound called “Dump”. A musical instrument and hence the name “Dump Dance”.
  4. The songs that accompany this dance have a wide variety of themes, from mythology to everyday life. It shows heroic events from the lives of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, and other Gods of the Hindu pantheon. They create other deals with simple day-to-day incidents of the people of Sikkim.

Maruni Dance Costume

Celebrating the victory of good over evil. The dancers in this dance are dressed in colorful costumes and glittering ornaments during the festival of Diwali. Therefore, there is always a person called “Dhatu-Varay” who acts as a court jester by wearing funny masks, and strange clothes to make people laugh, especially children.

मारुनी नृत्य

मारुनी पास के नेपाल, दार्जिलिंग, असम, भूटान और म्यांमार में लोकप्रिय नृत्य है। यह इन क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले नेपाली समुदाय का सबसे पुराना और सबसे प्रसिद्ध नृत्य है, जो मूल रूप से तिहाड़ उत्सव के हिस्से के रूप में नृत्य किया गया था। समृद्ध गहनों के साथ रंगीन कपड़े पहने, नर्तक पारंपरिक नेपाली नौमति बाजा ऑर्केस्ट्रा के साथ “बुराई “बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत” का जश्न और खुशिया ईशर मनाने के लिए यह नृत्य करते हैं।

यह नृत्य प्राचीन काल से लेकर आज तक मगर समुदाय की महत्वपूर्ण पहचानों में से एक रहा है। हाल के वर्षों में, युवा लोगों द्वारा इसे सीखने में रुचि की कमी के कारण, नृत्य विलुप्त होने का खतरा बन गया है। उस डर ने कुछ समुदायों को लामबंद करना शुरू कर दिया है। आज, समुदाय और वहा के समानीय लोग अपने युवाओं को इस नृत्य को संरक्षित करने के लिए प्रेरित करते है।

इतिहास

नृत्य की उत्पत्ति मगर समुदाय में हुई और बाद में विभिन्न समुदायों के लोगों ने इसे अपनाना शुरू कर दिया। पश्चिमी नेपाल में नृत्य किया गया मारुनी अन्य स्थानों की तुलना में अलग है। मारुनी और सोरथी नृत्य पश्चिमी नेपाल में मागर समुदाय द्वारा बनाए गए थे, और पूर्वी नेपाल में प्रवास करने वाले मगरों ने छोटे बदलाव करना शुरू कर दिया था क्योंकि उन्होंने उन्हें वहां भी प्रदर्शन किया था। आजकल गुरुंग, किरात और खास जैसे अन्य समुदाय भी विभिन्न अवसरों पर मारुनी नृत्य करते हैं।

बलिहंग उत्सव में, मारुनी, सोरथी और हुर्रा (पूर्वी मगरों द्वारा किया जाने वाला नृत्य जिसे देउसी नच के नाम से भी जाना जाता है) किया जाता है। माना जाता है कि इसकी उत्पत्ति 14वीं शताब्दी के दौरान पाल्पा के बीमार राजा बलिहंग राणा मगर पोखरा बुटवाल की ओर से हुई थी। बलिहंग राणा मगर 14 वीं शताब्दी (पालपा, पोखरा, बालडेंग, बुटवल और गोरखापुर के) के दौरान एक राजा थे, जिसके दौरान राज्य को पल्पा से बुटवल और गोरखपुर तक बढ़ाया गया था। देउसी रे का अर्थ है “पुजारी-राजा” और बहिलो का अर्थ है “आइए इसका अर्थ है “आइए हम सहयता करें” जो कि बलिहंग राणा मगर के विषय से संबंधित हैं।

मारुनी नृत्य प्रदर्शन

नर्तक लयबद्ध रूप से चलते हैं, अपनी हथेलियों पर तांबे की हलियों को संतुलित करते हुए, उन पर जले हुए दीया की व्यवस्था की जाती है। कभी-कभी “नौमत बाजा” के रूप में अंकित नौ वाद्य यंत्रों की संगत में मारुनी नृत्य किया जाता है। पहले यह नृत्य लड़कियों के वेश में युवा लड़के करते थे।

मारुनी नृत्य के वाद्ययंत्र और गीत

  1. यह संगीत और लोक नृत्य प्राकृतिक परिवेश की सुंदरता से संबंधित है, जो फसल के मौसम को दर्शाता है, और सौभाग्य और समृद्धि के लिए किया जाता है।
  2. मारुनी नृत्य नौ वाद्य यंत्रों की संगत में किया जाता है जिन्हें “नौ-मती बाजा” के नाम से जाना जाता है।
  3. नेपाली लोक नृत्य “तमंग सेलो” – तमांग समुदाय का यह समूह नृत्य “धंफू” की लयबद्ध ध्वनि के लिए किया जाता है, जो एक संगीत वाद्ययंत्र है और इसलिए इसे “धम्फू” नृत्य भी कहा जाता है।
  4. इस नृत्य के साथ आने वाले गीतों में पौराणिक कथाओं से लेकर रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी तक कई तरह के विषय हैं; कुछ भगवान राम, भगवान कृष्ण, भगवान शिव और हिंदू देवताओं के अन्य देवताओं के जीवन से वीर घटनाओं को दर्शाते हैं, और अन्य सिक्किम के लोगों की दिन-प्रतिदिन की साधारण घटनाओं से निपटते हैं।

मारुनी नृत्य पोशाक

बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत का जश्न मनाते हुए, इस नृत्य में नर्तकियों को दिवाली के त्योहार के अवसर पर रंगीन वेशभूषा और शानदार आभूषण पहनाए जाते हैं। इसलिए, हमेशा “धातु-वारय” नामक एक व्यक्ति होता है जो लोगों को विशेष रूप से बच्चों को हंसाने के लिए मजाकिया मुखौटे, और अजीब कपड़े पहनकर दरबारी जस्टर के रूप में कार्य करता है।
