Dr. Maya Rao Ji was born on 2 May 1928 in Malleswaram. Maya Rao is the only female dancer in South India who has mastered the Kathak of both Lucknow and Jaipur gharanas, being the main disciple of Shambhu Maharaj and Sundar Prasad. She belongs to Bangalore and her initial training was with Sohan Lal of Jaipur, who was then in Bangalore. While living as a student in 1946, he started a dance school and became the founder-director of the Natya Saraswati Arts Center in Bangalore, and was probably the first institution in South India to provide intensive training in Kathak.

After qualifying for an honors degree in literature, Maya Rao moved to Jaipur and for two years received training in Kathak from the best teachers available there. Shortly thereafter, he was awarded the Government of India Cultural Scholarship in Kathak and began his training under Shambhu Maharaj in New Delhi. Shambhu Maharaj was found among his very hardworking and promising disciples and admitted on more than one occasion that he had trained him to an extent he had not trained any other disciple in his entire career. 1 September in Bangalore Maya Rao Ji passed away shortly after midnight of 2014.

Experience and Awards

Maya Rao also has the rare distinction of being a dance duet with her mentor, Shambhu Maharaj. She was the director in charge of the early dance section of the Indian Art Center, New Delhi, and did some research in both Kathak and Ballet. Dr. Maya Rao was the nominee for the award of the Soviet Scholarship of Choreography by the Government of India. She is the first Indian with a post-graduate certificate in choreography from the State Institute of Theater Arts, Moscow. She has over twenty years of experience as a dance, choreographer, and teacher. Maya Rao has more than fifty ballets to his credit in front of appreciative audiences across India and abroad.

Maya Rao has the unique distinction of being the chief advisor for the choreography of the famous ballet Shakuntala and the drama Ramayana and has trained many young candidates in the arts from India and abroad. He is the founder-director of the Natya Sansthan, New Delhi, established in 1964 in collaboration with the Government of India. Proficient in classical and folk-dance traditions of India and Sri Lanka, she used them in her girl’s choreography. Maya Rao Ji passed away shortly after midnight on 1 September 2014 in Bangalore.

माया राव जी का जन्म 2 मई 1928 मल्लेश्वरम में हुआ था। माया राव  दक्षिण भारत की एकमात्र महिला डांसर हैं, जिन्होंने शंभू महाराज और सुंदर प्रसाद की मुख्य शिष्या होने के नाते, लखनऊ और जयपुर दोनों घरानों की कथक में महारत हासिल की है। वह बैंगलोर से ताल्लुक रखती हैं और उनकी शुरुआती ट्रेनिंग जयपुर के सोहन लाल से हुई, जो उस समय बैंगलोर में थे। 1946 में एक छात्र के रूप में रहने के दौरान, उन्होंने नृत्य की एक पाठशाला शुरू की और बैंगलोर में नाट्य सरस्वती कला केंद्र के संस्थापक-निदेशक बन गए, और कथक में गहन प्रशिक्षण प्रदान करने वाली दक्षिण भारत की संभवतः यह पहली संस्था थी।

माया राव को अपने गुरु, शंभू महाराज के साथ नृत्य युगल होने का भी दुर्लभ गौरव प्राप्त है। वह भारतीय कला केंद्र, नई दिल्ली के प्रारंभिक नृत्य अनुभाग की प्रभारी निदेशक थीं, और उन्होंने कथक और बैले दोनों में कुछ शोध किए। वह कोरियोग्राफी की सोवियत छात्रवृत्ति के पुरस्कार के लिए भारत सरकार की नामिती थी। वह स्टेट इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ थिएटर आर्ट्स, मास्को की कोरियोग्राफी में पोस्ट-ग्रेजुएट सर्टिफिकेट के साथ पहली भारतीय हैं। उन्हें नृत्य, कोरियोग्राफर और शिक्षक के रूप में बीस वर्षों का अनुभव है। पूरे भारत और विदेशों में सराहनीय दर्शकों के सामने अपने क्रेडिट के लिए उनके पास पचास से अधिक बैलेट हैं।

उन्हें प्रसिद्ध बैले शकुंतला और नाटक रामायण की कोरियोग्राफी के लिए मुख्य सलाहकार होने का अनूठा गौरव प्राप्त है, और उन्होंने भारत और विदेशों से कला में कई युवा उम्मीदवारों को प्रशिक्षित किया है। वह 1964 में भारत सरकार के सहयोग से स्थापित नाट्य संस्थान, नई दिल्ली के नाट्य संस्थान के संस्थापक-निदेशक हैं। भारत और श्रीलंका की शास्त्रीय और लोक-नृत्य परंपराओं में प्रवीण, उसने अपनी बालिकाओं की नृत्यकला में इनका उपयोग किया था। बैंगलोर में 1 सितंबर 2014 की मध्यरात्रि के तुरंत बाद माया राव जी निधन हो गया।
